Alone by SISTAR

I know I promised to do a review of Exo-M’s and Exo-K’s mini album MAMA, in addition to Big Bang’s mini-album Alive, but things have been a bit hectic lately. I hate how hectic everything is after spring break. Last week, I had a bioelectricity exam which didn’t really go that well…. :(. This week there are a bunch of assignments due (a lab report, a group paper, several HW assignments, a prelab assignment, and an abstract for a conference) and an orgo exam. The joys of being an engineering major!!! So those two reviews will have to be postponed until Thursday night, when I will have time to do them. But for now, I’ll do a short review on Sistar’s latest single Alone.

SISTAR is a Korean girl group consisting of Hyorin, Dasom, Bora and Soyu. In my opinion, they are one of the best girl groups out there because their performances and projects are always top-notch. Their previous singles Push Push, Shady Girl, How Dare You, and So Cool were all very energetic upbeat songs, so I was a bit surprised when I heard Alone because it wasn’t like any of their previous works. Its a bit slower and sadder than all their other songs, but nonetheless its a great song. I really liked the guitar riffs and the piano in the background. In addition, Hyorin and Soyu’s voices did a great job expressing the emotions of the lyrics (Hyorin’s voice is always so awesomee!!!! ❤ ❤ If only I could sing like her :D). I also liked how glamorous and sexy the girls were, and how they didn’t need to show much skin to achieve that. Overall, I really liked how SISTAR approached this new challenge and felt that they successfully conquered it. I hope their future works will be as strong as this  and that they’ll be successful with different concepts.

Hope you guys enjoyed my ramblings! Please support the girls by watching the video below and by buying their album! In addition, leave a comment below telling me what you think of the song and if there’s any specific songs or albums you would like me to review!

MAMA by Exo-K and Exo-M

SM Entertainment’s newest boy band Exo Planet has finally released their debut song after what seems to be a bajillion teaser videos, 2 prologue singles and a debut showcase in China and Korea. Exo is divided into two subunits: Exo-K (K stands for korean) and Exo-M (M stands for mandarin), each subunit will be promoting the same song but in different languages and in different countries. Exo-M will be singing the song in mandarin and promoting it in China, whereas Exo-K will be singing the song in Korean and promoting in Korea. The members of Exo-K are Suho, Kai, Sehun, Baekhyun, D.O, and Chanyeol, while the members of Exo-M are Kris, Lu Han, Tao, Chen, Lay, and Xiu Min.

I don’t wanna bash them because these boys definitely worked really hard to debut. Each member underwent at least 2-5 years of training in dancing, singing, rapping and etc. So I wanna congratulate them for finally debuting and wish them the best with their conquest of the world using addictive K-pop songs! I’m just gonna discuss my honest opinions and feelings on the  MV and song.

The title of their debut song is MAMA. The song is definitely impressive, but I feel like its trying to hard to be big and impressive. Its kind of like how a guy will try to act all macho and cool, when he obviously isn’t. That probably isn’t the best example, but whatever, take it or leave it.  The song combines the use of Gregorian chanting, rock and pop, which kinda made  sound like a really really weird Glee mash-up. I liked the parts where they were singing normally, (D.O. Baekhyun, and Chen’s voice is so pretty and awesome!!!!! I wish I could hit those high notes like Chen does!!) but didn’t really like the rock and chanting parts. Maybe the song will grow me after I OD on it…….

The MVs were definitely impressive, there was a lot of CGI and everything was definitely planned out very well. I liked how they tried to make a small story line in the beginning, to explain why the group was split up into two subunits, but it was way to cheesy for my taste. The tree in the MV reminded me of James Cameron’s Avator (The Tree of Life) and as my friend Judy kindly pointed out, Harry Potter (The Whomping Willow). The idea that each member was associated with a certain element (i.e water, air, thunder, fire and etc) reminded me  of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the scene where all members were gathered in brown robes was reminiscent of Star Wars. So the storyline was kinda like a mash-up of really really popular pop culture icons.

I actually prefer the Chinese version to the Korean version, maybe its because I kinda understand some of the Chinese lyrics or because I’m kinda biased towards Exo-M….. -AHEM-. Judy also pointed out the lyrics to the Chinese version flowed a lot better.  Anyways, one of the funniest parts of the song was the last line of the chorus, 告訴我 MAMA, which roughly translates to “Tell me MAMA.” I just burst out laughing because those words, just felt so out of place in this context, where the MV and song had such a serious vibe.

Now that I’ve given you guys my honest opinion on MAMA, please watch the MVs included and vote in the poll below! Let me know which subunit, Exo-M or Exo-K do you guys prefer more? Please support the boys by watching the MVs a bajillion times  or by buying their album. I hope to do a review on the album sometime in the following week!  So look out  for that! Hope you guys had fun reading my ramblings and have a good week!

She’s A Flirt-Baby Soul & Yoo Jia (ft. Dong Woo)

Pretty good song overall. What I didn’t like was the use of autotune in the end, I felt it was unnecessary because both of the girls are extremely good singers and it just felt out of place.
